Newsletter April 2020
After what has been a very wet winter it is nice to see a bit more sunshine, longer days and the garden coming to life.
We are, however, facing a few challenges at the moment and this is not our normal Newsletter but we felt a brief update would be useful.
As trustees of the ‘Friends’ charity, we understand that there are currently more pressing priorities both for the NHS and individuals. All of the ‘Friends’ meetings have been cancelled until further notice, including the Annual General Meeting planned for July 2020. We will let you know as soon as we have a new date.
However, we are very clear on how important our support to the Bournemouth Eye Unit is and we will, of course, continue to provide that support in the future.
In the meantime, we are reviewing all our administrative procedures, checking our policies reflect current good practice and making sure membership details are up to date. These are all things we can do while we stay home, protect the NHS and save lives.
This, we hope, will put us in the best position possible to prioritise fund raising and continue with our support to the Eye Unit as soon as we are able.
Right now, we just want to say a great big thank you to the staff of the NHS and to everyone who is working hard to support us all through these difficult times.
Please keep well and stay safe and we look forward to your continued support.
Best regards Linda

Thank you Bournemouth Eye Unit and all of the NHS
Operationally, the Eye Unit itself is running an emergency and urgent service only during the current crisis. Patients affected are being contacted about their individual care. This will enable them to re-deploy staff where necessary and support the rest of the hospital where they can. It has been wonderful to see the number of people out on Thursday evenings clapping for all the staff of the NHS who are so willing to do whatever they can to look after us when we need it.
A Brief Update from the Treasurer
The total received in donations is excellent and we do thank everyone for being so generous. We also received a bequest of 3 items of jewellery which has raised a total of £2,850 – much appreciated by us all. The interest on our dividends amounted to £2,743 in December.
We are up to date with payment of agreed contributions which are:
Subscriptions and Occasional Donations
Our Membership Secretary is using this extended ‘stay at home’ time to make sure membership information and subscriptions are up to date. If we haven’t heard from you for a while, you will have received a letter or an email checking your membership. Many of the current membership would normally have paid their 2020 subscriptions at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July which we have had to postpone.
Reminder emails and letters have gone out with alternative ways to pay if this is convenient and possible for you to do. We also receive occasional donations, for which we are very grateful, and these can also be made on-line, directly to our bank account. If you are paying your membership on-line, please let Lorraine (Membership Secretary) know at [email protected]. The bank details are:
Sort Code: 09 01 29 Account No: 16247408 Account Name: The Friends of Bournemouth Eye Unit
Please quote your membership number and/or surname in the reference box

You, your friends and relations, together with New Members are most welcome to attend.

A new Macular Suite is to be installed in the Outpatients Dept. This will enable patient assessment and treatment to be carried out, if appropriate, on the same day. The suite will need to be equipped and the following is a list of some items required.
Fully motorised chair £4893.00

This may be a good time to join together to buy an item in memory of a loved one, to celebrate a special anniversary /birthday or nominate us as your Charity of the Year.
COMMITTEE NEWS:
The majority of our Committee members are willing to continue in post for the next year. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for their loyalty and support over the years.
However we do need nominations for the posts of Chairman and Membership Secretary.
These should be sent to me by the A.G.M. along with a brief outline of your/their background.
If you nominate someone other than yourself, I would request that you inform them of your intention beforehand.
The only criterion required is that nominees are paid up members of the Friends.
Judith Allebon our Membership Secretary has served on the Committee since 2004.
She has spent many valuable hours keeping membership details up to date and transferring them onto a data base, with the help and support of David Lewis (who incidentally, is prepared to continue to assist with this task).
She has also been a loyal supporter of all our events throughout the years and has offered innovative and practical ideas when required. Judith now feels that family and health commitments need to take priority.
Thank you Judith for all your friendship, help and support.
As Chairman and a Member I have served on the Committee since 1996. I started with dish washing duties in a Westbourne church hall with Miss Frank and have assisted in a variety of ways, rising to the “dizzying heights” of Chairman! Time for a change I feel!
We are both fully prepared to continue supporting the Friends in any way we can, if and when required.

AHOY THERE!!
Our pirates’ group has just registered two new members. We met them both at our Open Morning in April.
All members are very welcome to enrol family or friends. The fee is just £1 to join, there is no annual membership for our Junior members.
Contact me at friends2eyeunit.gmail.com or place a request in our letterbox in Outpatients and I will send application forms directly to the parents or guardians. J.A.
Our MEMBERSHIP DRIVE days were held on April 16th and 18th and raised over £200 and we enrolled several new members. Our “Lucky Square” game winner number 25, won the £50 prize. We are pleased to inform you that he is a volunteer helper in the Eye unit. Congratulations Barry!
TREASURER’S UPDATE
Since the last newsletter there are several points of interest to share with you. At our April Committee meeting we agreed to fund 3 items of medical equipment:
2 x Tonometers/stands at a total of £9211.80 – used for taking eye pressure automatically without touching the eye.
Micro forceps costing £3,085, used for various repairs and treatments following cataract surgery.
Lens implantation forceps -£477.60 used following more complicated operations.
DONATIONS
THE YAG LASER APPEAL
Many donations have been received and members appreciate knowing the exact item they are donating to. Thank you very much for your generosity.
SMARTIES
Smartie tubes are regularly collected from our post box and since last year’s A.G.M. £324 has been banked – a simple but very lucrative way of collecting money. Smartie tubes will be available again at the A.G.M. Please take one, fill it and return it to the post box when convenient.
In January, Judith and I attended the Trust board meeting, followed immediately by a meeting with the Catering manager to organise the A.G.M buffet. Prices have escalated this year, despite cutting back on some items. The type of refreshments provided will need a rethink! Have you any suggestions?
In February I was privileged to see a Yag Laser (our fundraising item) in action. “A very cool piece of kit” and one which will be of tremendous use in the Eye Unit – thank you for your kind donations.
A Gentle Reminder – all our Committee members are volunteers and work from home. Correspondence is responded to as soon as we can.

“We do not share any of the details which you have given us voluntarily on your membership form or in subsequent communications. Your personal details are not given to us by R.B.C.H. We are an independent charity, run entirely by volunteers.”
If you wish to amend any details, e-mail address, home address, please contact The Membership Secretary in writing using the postal address above, or e-mail: [email protected]

A.G.M. – Thursday 12th. July 2018 @ 6 p.m.

OCTOBER
At the end of October Julie Cartledge and I were invited to officially open the Christmas Fair at Barton on Sea Golf Club, browsing and buying items from their beautiful stalls. We had a cup of tea overlooking the spectacular, panoramic view, stretching from the Isle of Wight to Hengistbury Head in their restaurant. We were made most welcome by the Lady Golfers and their friends. They raised the magnificent sum of over £2,000 towards our funds – just the beginning of their fundraising year for us.
Well done ladies and many thanks!
NOVEMBER
The promotional stall in the Atrium was held in early November raising £180 from raffles and tombola. We were ably assisted by Committee members and Friends – Thank you all for this invaluable help.
Apart from fundraising, it enables us to meet a variety of hospital “people”, patients, visitors and hospital staff, thus raising “The Friends” profile at the same time.
In November volunteer patients who attended the Eye Unit to assist Ophthalmology students with their examinations, donated their travelling expenses, amounting to over £500 to our funds – our grateful thanks to you all.
DECEMBER
Once again we are indebted to Malcolm Allebon for his meticulous work in producing inserts for our Christmas cards, which were delivered to patients in the wards, day room and Out Patients by Pat Neville and Tricia Sullivan.
I attended the Royal Bournemouth Hospital 9 Lessons and Carols concert at Christchurch Priory. Bournemouth Male Voice Choir sang to a capacity congregation, while staff members and patients read the lessons.
JANUARY 2018
At our January Committee meeting we were pleased to learn that all medical equipment ordered, has been delivered, is in use and paid for.
Julie Cartledge demonstrated one of the new hand held slit lamps, funded by Barton Ladies, which will greatly assist staff when examining children and also other patients with mobility problems.

During 2 afternoons just before Easter, we took over a corner of the main Atrium. Our new banner drew attention to our table covered in information about the work of the Friends. Many patients and visitors bought our promotional pens, key fobs and bookmarks and the raffle was a great success. We raised some money and more importantly we became well known to a lot of people. We are delighted to say that the “Easter goodies” basket was won by an in-patient and delivered to her ward. The second gift basket of toiletries was won by someone enjoying coffee near our display. The soft toys were won by a visitor and one of the nurses. We appreciate the generous donations and the support we received. J.A.
On behalf of the committee I would like to thank our Chairman for all her efforts put in to make it a success. These events do not happen overnight but with prior planning and arranging. The work put in by Lis and her husband is much appreciated. P.N.
To date this year The Friends have agreed to purchase 5 pieces of equipment totalling £60,000.00.When the items have been delivered, the invoices will be paid.
And now to the “Smarties” fundraiser! (the story behind them and how it works).
I am sure that many of you do not know what this represents and so I shall share the “quirky” idea with you. When the tube is emptied and refilled with 20p.pieces, the value equates to £12.00 a tube. Since last year’s A.G.M. I have banked £216.00 = 18 tubes – a lucrative fund raiser.
Tubes will be available at this year’s A,G.M. and I do hope you will be able to partake and take a tube home with you. When filled please place it in The Friends mailbox in the Eye Unit outpatients dept. There is not much effort involved and no time limit. I thank you all in anticipation,
You can enjoy the Smarties and I shall enjoy banking the 20p. coins!
REMEMBER 1 tube filled value £12.00 towards our kitty!! P.N. (Treasurer)
DONATIONS
Throughout the year we have received several donations, for which we are very grateful. Recently we received a £2,000.00 donation from a very satisfied patient. The accompanying letters are also very heartening, giving support to both Friends and Staff alike.
As well as patient thanks, we also receive acknowledgement and thanks from members of staff, see below:
“I wanted to let you know that Mohammed Rashid, our corneal locum consultant, is delighted to be using the corneal grafting equipment that the Friends generously purchased”. C.M.
All this brightens our days and makes us determined to carry on.
